Die Aufnahmen für das Album fanden von Januar bis August 1969 an verschiedenen Orten in Großbritannien und Nordamerika statt. Die Produktion des Albums wurde dem Leadgitarristen und Songwriter der Band, Jimmy Page, zugeschrieben. Es war zudem das erste Album von Led Zeppelin, bei dem Eddie Kramer als Toningenieur mitwirkte.
