Oldfield war erst neunzehn Jahre alt, als er dieses größtenteils instrumentale Album aufnahm. Das Album wurde zunächst übersehen und verkaufte sich nicht gut, bis das Eröffnungsthema des Albums in „Der Exorzist“ verwendet wurde, wo es dann immer beliebter wurde. „Tubular Bells“ hat sich weltweit über 15 Millionen Mal verkauft.
