Die Band begann als Soul- und Jazz-Band und war eine der ersten, die sich der Psychedelia zuwandte, bevor sie sich dem Jazz zuwandte. Rückblickend betrachtet konnte Soft Machines Entwicklung nur im musikalisch-freigeistigen Umfeld des Musikbusiness der späten 60er/frühen 70er Jahre stattfinden. Es war eine Entwicklung, die einige der brillantesten und innovativsten Musikstücke dieser Zeit hervorbrachte.
