Nach der Veröffentlichung des ersten Albums von Led Zeppelin im Januar 1969 tourte die Band fieberhaft durch Großbritannien, Europa und Nordamerika – wo ihr Debüt einen respektablen Platz 10 der Billboard-Charts erreichte. Die dritte US-Tour der Band im Sommer 1969, vom 5. Juli bis zum 31. August, bestand ausschließlich aus Festivalauftritten, darunter Auftritte in Newport, Atlanta und Seattle, aber allgemein als ihr bester Auftritt der Tour gilt der letzte Auftritt der Band beim Texas International Pop Festival, das am 31. August auf dem Dallas International Motor Speedway in Lewisville, Texas, stattfand. Mit ihrem Auftritt in der Mitte des zweiten Tages des Festivals fegte Led Zeppelin die meisten Konkurrenten von der Bühne, darunter auch den Headliner des Tages, Santana, und das nur zwei Wochen nach ihrem Durchbruch in Woodstock.
