Janis Joplin was a singer and songwriter from Texas who performed in psychedelic rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company before performing solo. Janis Joplin was well known for her live performances and her ability to play multiple instruments. With Big Brother and the Holding Company, she achieved a number 1 album in the US with Cheap Thrills. Her most popular solo album, Pearl, also reached number 1 in the US charts, as did her single Me and Bobby McGee. Other popular singles include Piece of my Heart, Mercedes Benz, and To Love Somebody. Janis Joplin was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
